<p>Are you embarrassed by the look of your tummy, bottom and thighs? Do you hate getting all hot and sweaty exercising to the point of collapse just to try and lose some pounds? Would you like a more civilised way to rapidly burn body and booty fat? If you would then this is the most important weight loss article you’ll ever read. Please let me explain&#8230;</p>
<p>Over the years of working with hundreds of Shire women and men I’ve discovered that burning body fat doesn’t have to involve strenuous exercise, being ravenously hungry or depriving yourself. Losing weight comes down to three simple principles.</p>
<p><span id="more-132"></span>1. Insulin – controlling insulin is the holy grail of fat burning. Once you get this right weight loss happens by itself, without exercise or hunger. Insulin is so important is because it’s the hormone that signals your body to store body fat, particularly belly fat. But here’s the big news, your body only produces insulin when you eat carbohydrates (sugar, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, rice cakes and all breakfast cereals even Weetbix and oats). So when you eat any of these foods you’re telling your body to make fat! Therefore to switch your body into fat burning mode cut down your carbs and you’ll slash your insulin levels.</p>
<p>2. Exercise – don’t exercise too much. In fact the more you exercise the hungrier you’ll get. It’s just a natural physiological response. How many people have you seen going to the gym day after day, month after month but never losing much weight? They lose centimetres and get fit but their weight just doesn’t budge. That’s because they’re working against their body not with it. Amazingly many of my patients who do the least exercise lose the most weight. Why? Because weight loss is 99% diet. I’m not saying exercise isn’t important, it is, just not for weight loss.</p>
<p>3. Organisation – all your best intentions will be brought undone if you’re not organised. Making sure you have the right food in the fridge, planning out your meals and pre-preparing lunches etc will keep you on track. When you’re not organised food drops down your priority list and you end up grabbing whatever you can, then you beat yourself up over your lack of discipline. Being organised means you don’t have to rely on willpower so even the weakest willed person can succeed. Time and again I’ve seen fantastic results from patients who tell me they don’t have any willpower. That’s because I get them on a system that makes them organised.</p>

</p><p>Just because you are menopausal doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t lose weight. A lot of women who come to see me think that once they go through menopause they are destined to put on weight.</p>
<p>Although this is common it doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s the natural course of events. If your body is functioning well menopause is an uneventful transition and you can lose weight without difficulty.</p>
<p><strong>What makes it such a problem these days is that not many women&#8217;s bodies are functioning optimally by the time they hit menopause.</strong> What should happen when your overies pack it in and stop producing oestrogen is your stress glands (the adrenal glands) should step in to take up the slack.</p>
<p><span id="more-81"></span></p>
<p>Your adrenal glands should be able to produce enough oestrogen to meet your female requirements and keep you symptom free. Unfortunately life has just been getting busier and busier for each successive generation. And after 50yrs or so of living, raising a family and maybe working too your poor old adrenal glands are all exhausted.</p>
<p>So when you hit menopause your adrenal glands can&#8217;t produce enough oestrogen and the menopausal symptoms start. And if the hot flushes aren&#8217;t enough the weight gain starts.</p>
<p>And if you throw in on top of this a lifetime of exposure to pollution, household chemicals, pesticides and food preservatives that makes your liver sluggish and slows down your metabolism, is it any wonder you can&#8217;t lose weight.</p>
<p>So if you are about to go through, are going through or have already been through menopause and you want to lose weight you need to do more than just cut back your calories.</p>
<p><strong>You need an integrated hormone balancing, detoxification and diet modification program.</strong> When you address these three areas you are able to lose weight just like when you were young.</p>
<p>Replenishing your adrenals with the right nutrients and herbs lifts oestrogen levels and prevents menopausal weight gain.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">A good liver tonic is essential for ridding your body of all those accumulated wastes</span> and getting your liver back into tip top shape so it can burn fat and carbohydrates efficiently and lose weight easily. When this starts to happen you get a major boost in energy levels and mood.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">And finally you need to cut back your carbs</span> and eat a bit more natural saturated fat found in butter and animal products. Saturated fat is the building block of oestrogen. So all those years of low fat eating have been setting you up for a major fall when you hit menaopause.</p>
<p><strong>Get these three aspects right and you&#8217;ll lose weight like never before. Ignore them and just focus on calories and fat and you&#8217;ll continue to struggle.</strong></p>

</p><p><strong>Gastric banding</strong> is becoming a more and more popular means of weight loss.</p>
<p>Like weight loss pills it offers an <span style="text-decoration: underline;">easy </span>solution to lose weight. Just go in, get a band put around your stomach, come out and lose weight without having to change your lifestyle.</p>
<p><strong>But is this really going to improve your health? And what about potential side effects?</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Although you lose weight with gastric banding it doesn&#8217;t teach you anything about improving your diet</span>. Of course the dietitians and doctors will tell you to <em>cut back on fat.</em></p>
<p>But as we know fat isn&#8217;t really the problem anyway. The only thing you learn is that you can&#8217;t physically eat as much now because it will make you sick.</p>
<p><span id="more-51"></span></p>
<p>However you can still eat small portions of junk like ice cream. You may be only able to eat a small serve, so you don&#8217;t put on weight, but the sugar in it is still damaging your health.</p>
<p>And it isn&#8217;t just overweight people who die early. Thin people, who may be able to eat what they like and not put on weight, can still get cancer or diabetes and have strokes and heart attacks just like overweight people if they eat rubbish.</p>
<p><strong>The laws of nutrition are the same for everyone.</strong></p>
<p>Then there&#8217;s the risks associated with having a general anaesthetic, the liquid diet you&#8217;re on for weeks after the surgery and if you eat to much you get sick. Doesn&#8217;t sound very appealing does it?</p>
<p><strong>So when everything&#8217;s considered I don&#8217;t think it is a healthy or desirable weight loss procedure.</strong></p>
<p>It just appeals to the modern &#8220;magic pill&#8221; mentality.</p>
<p>But people just have to realise there is no &#8220;magic pill&#8221;, but there are healthy ways to lose weight that are easy and give quick results. You just have to accept that you have to change what you&#8217;re doing if you want to change.</p>

</p><p>Having a good reason to lose weight is vital if you want to have any chance of reaching your goal. A lot of people decide &#8220;yep, I&#8217;m going to lose weight&#8221; but then not very long into it they give up, while others manage to keep going through thick and thin.</p>
<p>What sets people apart? Why do some succeed while others fail?</p>
<p>The answer lies <span style="text-decoration: underline;">in their reason for starting in the first place</span>. Picture this, you go to the doctor or hopefully the naturopath and they say &#8220;look, if you don&#8217;t lose weight you&#8217;re going to be dead in 6 months&#8221;. How motivated do you think you would be lose weight and make sure you get it off.</p>
<p>Heaps&#8230; wouldn&#8217;t you.</p>
<p>Now picture this scenario. A person goes to the doctor or naturopath and they get told &#8220;your cholesterol&#8217;s a bit high I think you should lose some weight.&#8221; Is the motivation as high in this case. No it isn&#8217;t. There&#8217;s no immediate pain or fear of death to drive them.</p>
<p><span id="more-45"></span></p>
<p><strong>So having a good reason can make all the difference.</strong> Now you don&#8217;t have to be in fear of your life to have motivation but you do need a reason that is causing you enough pain to push you along.</p>
<p>The pain doesn&#8217;t have to be physical, it can be emotional. You might be unhappy and depressed by the way you look, you may be sick and tired of being sick and tired. Or you may have a special occassion that you want to look a million dollars for.</p>
<p>Whatever the reason it has to cause you some pain if you fail to lose weight. This compelling reason is your motivator when things get tough, which they innevitably do. When you go off track or you&#8217;re being tempted by food you shouldn&#8217;t be eating you need to remind yourself why it is you trying to lose weight.</p>
<p>Once you do this it will evoke those painful feelings that drove you to start losing weight in the first place. And that&#8217;s usually enough to keep you track or put you back on.</p>
<p>So have a good think about why it is you want to lose weight. It needs to be more than just because you think you need to.</p>
