If you have hormonal acne, I’m sure you’ve already taken some supplements. You might be or have been taking Vitex/chaste tree, zinc, DIM, probiotics, evening primrose oil, a hair, skin, and nails formula, a liver detox formula, or a host of other supplements.
But can I ask you… Why did you choose those supplements?
Was it because a friend told you?
Or was it because you read a blog?
Or was it because you saw someone recommend them on YouTube?
Or you did some research and thought, “Okay, these are the things I need to use.”
No doubt you’ve been looking into what are the best supplements for hormonal acne, and you’ve been trying to work out what you need.
But if you haven’t done any testing to uncover your hormone imbalances, no matter how you’ve chosen your supplements, you’ve just been guessing. And so the only way you can truly know if the supplements you’ve chosen are the right ones for you is if you test your hormone levels.
Testing your hormone levels is critical for a couple of reasons. First, it allows you to discover your specific hormone levels, not someone else’s. Second, testing pinpoints your hormonal imbalances and reveals what hormones you need to adjust.
Do you need to adjust testosterone? Do you need to adjust progesterone? Do you need to adjust both testosterone and progesterone?
You wouldn’t know unless you test your hormones.
Testing helps you identify the specific herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional supplements you need to correct your hormonal imbalances. This makes it possible for you to design an individualized supplement program to cure your hormonal acne. Testing gets rid of guessing and so saves you time and money. This is important when you’re young, studying, working part-time, or working full-time, and you’re only on a junior wage.
Because you don’t want to waste money on supplements you don’t need.
So, now we’ll go through what I’ll reveal: the secret to getting your skin clear and saving yourself a lot of time and money.
To start, let’s look at an example of how the process works. Here, we have someone you might be familiar with from YouTube and Instagram: Sarah from Sarah’s Day.
I’m her naturopath, and my details are highlighted in yellow. Let’s go through what I did with her to pinpoint her hormone imbalances and choose the supplements she needed to fix them.
Here, Sarah is showing her adrenal hormone saliva test results. This test measured her cortisol and DHEA levels.
In this test, she’s showing the result of her salivary testosterone test. You can see it’s high.
By doing these tests allowed me to pinpoint exactly what her hormonal imbalances were and then know exactly what supplements she needed to rebalance her hormones and clear up her skin. For her particular situation, I prescribed her Gluco Support, a custom herbal tonic, and Seriphos.
Now, because everyone’s a little bit different, you’d need different supplements for Sarah. It’s going to depend on your hormone imbalances. And so, the secret to choosing the right supplements is to get your hormones checked. Only that way will you know exactly what you need. Otherwise, as I said before, you’re just guessing.
So, once I was able to pinpoint exactly what Sarah’s hormonal imbalances were, I was able to prescribe her an individualized supplement program. If you follow her vlog, you’ll have seen that her skin cleared up by taking those supplements.
So, the question you probably have now is… “how do I get my hormones checked?”
That’s a great question because, in the past, it’s been difficult. You’d go to your doctor and ask them about getting your hormones checked. They’d either say “no” flat out, “we don’t need to know that”. Or if they did do the testing for you, it was done by blood. Most of the time, the blood test results would come back normal. And they’d tell you, “Look, your hormone levels are normal”.
It’s obvious, though, that if you’ve got hormonal acne, then there’s a hormonal problem. The key is pinpointing what that imbalance is. This is where saliva hormone testing is the secret. But saliva testing is difficult to access on your own, and even if you did get it done, you don’t have the expertise to interpret the results.
But the good news is that we have the access, expertise, and experience to get your hormones tested with a saliva test, interpret the results, and create a supplement plan for you.

Hi! I have 2 questions:) I’m on accutane right now for the second time within a little over a year. If i got this test done, would i need to take a break from accutane a few weeks before? Or does it not change the results if i just keep taking them while doing the test?
I also got a food intolerence blood test done at my doctors and she said i’m not allergic og intolerant to any food. Do i need to get another type of test to check if it’s true? Cause i don’t really belivere that there aren’t anything when i have so much lower face acne

Hi Lauren, the good news is accutane doesn’t affect your hormones so it doesn’t affect the hormone test results so you can do the hormone test while still taking it.
In regards to food allergies, they can be hard to pinpoint even with the various types of tests particularly if you don’t noticeably react to foods after you eat them. Often the best way to assess food allergies/intolerances is to do an elimination diet, such as a gluten free, dairy free, soy free, sugar free diet and see if your acne improves.
I do find that while diet can be a major trigger for many women’s acne I do also find that diet has little or no impact on many women’s acne too. I help plenty of women who find that no matter how clean they eat or how restricted they eat their acne is the same. This is because if it’s hormones triggering your acne then fixing your hormones is the solution, not your restricting your diet or shutting off oil production.

Your acne is clearly hormonal. Accutane is a horrible, horrible bandaid that doesn’t serve as a true solution. There’s so many people who’ve done accutane that still get acne afterwards, sometimes even worse. You know why? Because their hormones are out of whack. Females often experience hormonal acne mood swings etc due to the natural fluctuation of estrogen and progesterone in every phase of their cycle. Download the app Flo it will tell you when your progesterone is higher than your estrogen and vice versa based on where you are in your cycle. Helped me a lot! Then you’ll know what herbs to take at each stage. Always use a natural approach when it comes to topicals and supplements. It won’t steer you wrong
Can I do this if I take dim vitex and evening primrose oil now?

Hi Donna, you need to stop them a week before you do the test because they do affect hormone levels and can skew the results. Healthy regards, Hayden Keys
Getting hormone tests does not necessarily tell you anything helpful. I’m definitely not alone in having had many comprehensive hormone panels that are completely normal. But the fact that I have cystic acne before my period (as well as other obviously hormonal symptoms, from pain to hot flashes) remains consistent for the past 2 decades. It is a good idea to get tested but don’t be misled into believing the results will necessarily tell you anything useful. It’s not just your levels that matters, it’s how your body reacts. We’re very complex and some people have sensitivities to their own hormones. Trial and error may end up being the only way to find a solution.
I definitely agree people should research and not just take a supplement cocktail because it worked for someone else!
If anything, you might get genetic testing done. Some healthcare providers will do it, but it’s much more affordable than ever and well worth it. One thing to check for is a common genetic mutation that makes B vitamins a no-go. I wish I had checked before B6 & B12 destroyed my skin!

There is a lot of subtlety to reading hormone panels. At first glance results may look normal because the results fall in the normal range. However, often it’s the comparison of one hormone to another that indicates the issue rather than any of the results being out of range. This is why having an experienced practitioner interpret the results is important. We have looked at thousands of test results and can see issues where less experienced eyes can’t.
Genetic tests can be useful but they indicate predispositions (a potential problem). They need to be used alongside other tests to assess if the predisposition has become a problem.

Can I take DIM and evening primrose oil together? or should I stop one of them
Author
Hi Lindsie, generally it is fine to take both. Healthy regards, Hayden Keys
I’m taking spironalactone for hormonal acne do I need to stop this before testing
Author
Hi Hillary, yes it is best to stop it before testing because it suppresses male hormone levels. Otherwise the test result won’t be truly indicitive. What type of hormone test are you planning to do?
Hi Hayden
If you have a test come back with high E3 but low E1, normal E2 and low progesterone and low testosterone is Vitexokay to take alongside 3-indoor-carbinol?
In terms of treating hormonal acne…
Author
Hi Jade, I can’t give you specific advice here but in general, yes vitex if fine to take if there is low E1, E2 and testosterone. However, be aware that indol-3-carbinol will lower E1 and E2 further.
